The deepening ecological crisis may be considered a crisis of perception. Many people, indeed whole cultures, seem to have lost their ability to perceive the more than human natural world with any clarity. How, we may wonder, did humankind become so blind and so deaf to the living land? More important, how can we renew the lost intimacy between our senses and the sensuous earth?
Ecologist and philosopher David Abram will present The Ecology of Wonder: Consciousness, Language and the Animate Earth at the Seventh International Conference on Science and Consciousness, April 22-27, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Come and explore the uncanny influence of language upon our experience of the world around us. Weaving poetics with careful reflection, David will disclose some of the hidden ways that consciousness is shaped by our relation to speech and silence. David Abram is the author of The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-than-Human World. An accomplished sleight-of-hand magician who has lived with indigenous sorcerers in Indonesia, Nepal and the Americas, his essays have appeared often in such journals as Orion, Tikkun, Environmental Ethics, Wild Earth, Parabola, Resurgence and The Ecologist, as well as in over 35 edited anthologies. Nomadic by nature, David teaches widely on several continents.

David was named by the Utne Reader as one of a hundred visionaries currently transforming the world. His work focuses upon the cultural causes and consequences of environmental disarray; upon the experiential effects of technological change; and upon the ecological dimensions of sensory perception and of language - the manner in which these two, interdependent realms (sensing and speaking) modulate the ethical relation between humankind and the animate earth. David recently founded the Alliance for Wild Ethics. He maintains a passionate interest in interspecies communication, and in the rejuvenation of oral culture.
