Russell Targ
Russell is a physicist who was a pioneer in the development of the laser and other laser applications. He was cofounder of the Stanford Research Institute’s investigation into psychic abilities in the 1970s and 1980s. His work in this area, remote viewing, was published in Nature, Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is coauthor of six books dealing with the scientific investigation of psychic abilities including Miracles of Mind: Exploring Non-Local Consciousness and Spiritual Healing, Heart of the Mind: How to Experience God Without Belief , Limitless Mind and The End of Suffering: A Guide to Fearless Living. In 1997, Targ retired from Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Company as a senior scientist and now pursues ESP research.

Workshop: Scientific and Spiritual Implications of Psychic Abilities: Why Bother with ESP?
Saturday, March 28 - 3:30–5:30pm
What do the healer, the mystic, the psychic and the spy have in common? They are all in touch with their non-local mind and our community of spirit. During the 1970’s and 80’s, Stanford Research Institute carried out investigations of our ability to experience and describe distant events blocked from ordinary perception. This intuitive capacity was named remote viewing. The research was supported by the CIA and many other government organizations for gathering intelligence about worldwide activities during the Cold War.
We will explore extrasensory perception, precognition, intuitive diagnosis and spiritual healing, together with the spiritual implications of psychic abilities from the Hindu mystic Patanjali, and the Dzogchen dharma masters down to the present time, as they might be applied to expanding one’s awareness. We will discuss how to recognize the actual psychic signal and how to separate it from the mental noise of memory, imagination and analysis and why we should bother with ESP?
The scientific and spiritual implications of psychic abilities illuminate our observation that we live in a profoundly interconnected world in which separation is an illusion. The most exciting research in quantum physics today is the investigation of what physicist, David Bohm, calls quantum-interconnectedness or non-local correlations. This surprising coherence between distant entities is called non-locality. Physicist, Henry Stapp says these quantum connections could be the “most profound discovery in all of science.”
Goal: Provide the tools to enable one to experience oneself as non-local awareness, rather than just a physical body.
Learning Objectives:
- Show historical evidence that much of our personal suffering comes from defending the story of who we think we are,
- Demonstrate that experiencing spaciousness and non-local awareness is a path to liberation, as compared with the ego and self-centeredness, and
- Provide instructions and an experience of remote viewing to demonstrate our non-local capabilities and our spacious nature.
